An apicoectomy may be necessary when inflammation persists in the bony area surrounding the tooth after a root canal.
Under local anesthesia, our endodontist will reflect the gum tissue to visualize underlying bone and to remove infected tissue. The very tip of the root is removed at this time. A root-end filling is placed to prevent reinfection of the root. The incision is closed with sutures. Over the next few months, the bone will continue to heal around the root. Following an apicoectomy, most patients resume normal activities within 24 hours. Our team will extensively discuss post-operative instructions with you.
